Holidays

 |
As they usher in days of joyous celebration,
Jews have a unique obligation to remember the poor
and the needy. It is in the midst of such joy that
Jews feel this duty most acutely; they know their
happiness is not shared by millions of people around
the globe.
MAZON is lucky to have dedicated and resourceful
supporters who work to include the less fortunate
in their holiday observances.
- Afikoman Find: Ask the person
that has found the Passover afikoman
to give a portion of his/her gift to tzedakah.
- Chanukah Dinner: As the
year draws to an end, hold a formal synagogue
dinner that features a guest speaker from MAZON.
- Chanukah Gifts: During this
gift giving season, make socially responsible,
charitably minded Chanukah contributions in
honor of friends and loved ones. Pick one night
of Chanukah to donate the money you would have
otherwise used for buying gifts on that night.
- Dinner Downgrade: When planning
an annual synagogue fundraising dinner, downgrade
the dinner to a dessert reception and contribute
the difference in cost to MAZON or some other
tzedakah project.
- Mitzvah Basket/Mishloach Manot Delivery:
As an alternative to decorating the sanctuary
with flower arrangements for special events,
fill baskets with non-perishable food items
and use them as decorative adornments. After
the simcha, ask congregants to deliver
the food to a local food-related charity. If
a professional delivery service is used, ask
the company to waive its delivery fee and instead
donate the money as tzedakah.
- Purim Lottery: Have participants
buy a lottery ticket in which each “prize”
is the privilege to make a charitable donation.
The “prizes” can range from $2.00
to $200.00. This “reversed lottery”
is appropriate for a Purim party in which role
reversals are celebrated.
- Tzedakah boxes: Make decorative
tzedakah boxes and ask the synagogue
to distribute them when congregants pick up
High Holy Days services tickets.
