At
the end of a busy week, Jews take time to rest and
relax. But on Shabbat, though Jews temporarily retreat
from the world, they don’t lose sight of its
many problems.
As they prepare to enjoy time off from the hustle
and bustle of daily life, Jews are mindful that
everyone deserves a Sabbath – time away from
the headaches and hiccups that characterize the
rest of the week.
MAZON supporters view tzedakah as a critical component of Shabbat preparation, a way to ensure that even the neediest families get their sacred day of rest.
So on Shabbat, consider the following ways to integrate tzedakah:
- Shabbat Services Helpers: Hire young congregants as helpers at Shabbat dinners or kiddush, and encourage them to donate the money they earn as tzedakah.
- Shabbat Fund: Have synagogue members pay into an annual Shabbat Fund. This pool of money can then be donated to a charity that alleviates suffering on Shabbat and every day.
- Keep the Sabbath Holy: Consider making topical discussions a part of the Shabbat experience. While breaking bread with guests, introduce topics related to MAZON’s social justice themes.
