Here are some tips on writing letters to your
legislators.
Know the issue. Be sure that
you are well informed. If you are writing letters
as a group activity, make sure someone explains
the issue at hand and answers any questions.
Know where bills related to your issue
are in Congress. You can be most effective
by directing your legislator’s attention
directly to relevant legislation.
Know who your congressperson is. Letters
have the greatest impact when sent to the representative
from your district and the two senators from your
state.
Even if you disagree with your congressperson
on an issue, it is important to let him/her know
that s/he is not representing your beliefs.
Be personal. Congresspeople
acknowledge that letters with a personal spin
grab their attention. If the issue hits close
to home, don’t be afraid to share your story.
Be concise. Keep your letter
short and to the point. Remember that congressional
aides have many letters to read!
End the letter. Be sure to sign
the letter and print your name and address so
that your congressperson can write back!
