Caring for the poor has been part of Jewish marriages
since Abraham and Sarah first opened the sides of
their tent and provided food and drink to all who
passed by — especially to those who were poor.
In the shtetls of Eastern Europe, wedding feasts
did not begin until the poor of the community had
sat down to eat. And when Jews first came to America
from every corner of the world, they brought few
possessions, carrying instead a wealth of Jewish
traditions. Chief among these was the obligation
to feed the hungry, often in connection with a celebration
feast.
By
giving 3% of the cost of your wedding celebration
to MAZON, you can make these Jewish traditions your
own. Sharing your simcha with MAZON allows you to
express values at the forefront of Jewish communal
life: respect for one’s fellow men/women,
involvement in the community and care for those
in need. By fulfilling the ancient Jewish tradition
of inviting the poor to the table, you add joy and
meaning to your celebration, while providing important
help to hungry people worldwide.
The traditional breaking of the glass signifies
the end of the wedding ceremony. This symbol of
sorrow in the midst of joy also reminds us that
we live in a world broken into many pieces. By contributing
3% of the cost of your wedding to MAZON, you help
make the world whole.
The following are just some of the ways that you can share your wedding celebration with those in need:
- Table Cards - The cards
can be used either as table cards or individual
place cards to signify that your family has
invited the poor to your celebration table.
They are free-of-charge with any size contribution
and can be sent to you in advance of your special
day.

- Certificates - The certificate
can be used in conjunction with your wedding
to honor individuals who are participating in
your ceremony, such as a rabbi, cantor, friends
or relatives. The usual donation amount is $18
(chai) per certificate. If time permits, we
would be happy to provide a certificate for
the rabbi to present to you under your chuppah,
indicating that your family has invited MAZON
to the table of your simcha.

- In Lieu of Gifts Card -
These can be included with your invitation if
you are requesting that guests make contributions
to MAZON instead of giving gifts.

- Tributes - At your request,
MAZON will send a personalized tribute card,
notifying the bride and groom that you have
made a contribution in their honor. To cover
the cost of these tributes, MAZON requests a
minimum contribution of $15 each.
