Does MAZON
only fund Jewish organizations?
No. MAZON funds a wide variety of programs/organizations
working to alleviate hunger domestically and abroad.
Although we are a “Jewish response to hunger,”
we are not solely a response to Jewish hunger.
Currently, approximately 20% of our domestic grants
are awarded to Jewish-sponsored organizations.
Additionally, the majority of our International
grantmaking supports programs in Israel.
How many
organizations does MAZON fund each year?
MAZON grants more than $3 million, to over 300
anti-hunger organizations, each year. MAZON funds
organizations that work to alleviate the immediate
effects of hunger through food provision; that
empower low-income people and communities through
various social service programs; and that strengthen
government policies and programs designed to benefit
people in need (food stamps, WIC, school meals).

What is
the typical size of a MAZON grant?
Each of MAZON’s five funding categories
(Advocacy/Education/Research,
Emergency
Food Assistance, Food
Banks, Multi-Service,
International)
has a specific grant range. Across categories,
a typical MAZON grant is $7,000 – $10,000.
Our minimum grant is $5,000 in any given category;
our larger grants ($35,000+) support the activities
of national anti-hunger organizations.

What is
a Letter of Inquiry?
A Letter of Inquiry expresses interest in applying
for a MAZON grant. It also provides an overview
of the agency’s work and/or the program
for which funding is sought.
As part of MAZON’s two-step application
process, organizations interested in applying
for a MAZON grant must first submit a Letter of
Inquiry. From the information provided in the
Letter of Inquiry, MAZON staff determines whether
or not an organization will be invited to submit
a proposal for full funding.

Can I submit my

Does
MAZON award grants for capital campaigns, equipment,
and/or food purchase?
MAZON does not provide grants for capital campaigns.
On occasion, MAZON has provided modest support
for equipment and/or food purchase.
However, grants for these types of requests are
very rare and are limited to organizations serving
low-income people in rural areas. Organizations
interested in requesting funding for equipment
and/or food purchase must first receive permission
from MAZON before doing so.

Does MAZON fund
shelters/programs focused on homelessness?
MAZON recognizes homelessness as a pressing, tragic
social problem, one that has undeniable links
to hunger. However, we are able to fund only those
direct-service organizations (including shelters
and homeless service agencies) that incorporate
significant feeding programs and anti-hunger advocacy
and public education activities.

Does MAZON
make emergency grants?
MAZON has two grant cycles – one in the
Fall and one in the Spring. Occasionally, MAZON’s
staff and board of directors approve an “off-cycle”
grant to address emergency situations. Examples
are natural disasters that devastate low-income
communities and civil unrest in impoverished countries
that results in declining health and starvation.
MAZON is unable to entertain unsolicited emergency
requests. When an emergency situation arises that
is appropriate for MAZON’s involvement,
we work with our network of grantees and partners
in the broader hunger/poverty community to respond.
