Individuals

MAZON receives much of its support from individual donors who have taken it upon themselves to find creative ways to contribute to MAZON’s anti-hunger mission. Some recent examples include:

Herbert Berger Fund:
A lifelong social justice activist, Herbert Berger was known to friends and family for his commitment to family and to Jewish life.

Bat Mitzvah Cookbook Project:
Madeline Scheffler, a bat mitzvah student, created a cookbook of favorite recipes from family and friends. She distributed the cookbook - with a MAZON donation envelope inside - to her guests, and suggested a $5.00 contribution to alleviate hunger. Madeline’s act of tzedakah was featured in Moment magazine. The cookbook is now in its third printing.

Celebrate with Tzedakah:
In Minneapolis, MN, centerpiece designer Frances Fischer runs a socially responsible business. When she designs centerpieces for special events, she charges two fees - one for her supplies and labor, and another for a designated charity. Some of the proceeds from her work go towards fight hunger through MAZON.

Field of Dreams:
The New Orleans Zephyrs, an AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros baseball team, held a Jewish Community Night. The team donated to MAZON $3 of each ticket purchased by a Jewish organization or synagogue.

Hunger Bicycle Ride:
Lisa and Mark Sladkus of New York, NY, cycled 2,000 miles from Canada to Mexico along North America’s west coast and donated funds raised to MAZON.

Hunger on the High Seas:
While serving as rabbi on a cruise ship, Dr. Tamar Earnest mentioned the importance of tzedakah to some of the ship’s passengers. Moved by her impassioned plea, one couple immediately wrote a check and decided to dedicate it to hunger relief and MAZON. Which just goes to show: MAZON support comes from the most unlikely of places!

Tooth Fairy:
First grader Aliza Weiss of Sohon, OH, saved her tooth fairy money to be given to the poor, and sent it as tzedakah to MAZON.

Piano Man:
Daniel Goodman of Lexington, MA, is an amateur pianist who plays the competition circuit and gives frequent concerts at MIT. With the help of MIT Hillel, he played a recent concert as a benefit for hunger relief, with the proceeds coming to MAZON.

Soup-er Bowl:
Members of Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, MD, participated in “Soup-er Bowl Sunday.” When parents dropped off their children at religious school on the appointed day, the kids brought with them cans of soup and other nonperishable food items for a local charity, as well as donations for MAZON.

Sweet Offerings:
In Austin, TX, Melanie Lewis and Abby Dusansky held a “Dessert for MAZON” fundraiser at The Kosher Store. Attendees paid a small entrance fee, and proceeds came to MAZON.

50th Birthday Blog:
In honor of his half-century milestone, Orange County, CA-based MAZON supporter Jeff Metzger launched a campaign to raise $25,000 for MAZON and its anti-hunger work in rural Nebraska. His blog tracked the campaign's progress, and charted his volunteer odyssey to New Orleans, where he lent a hand to local hunger relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

(Please note: MAZON is deeply grateful to Jeff Metzger for his efforts on the organization's behalf. The portion of his blog that contains political views is personal to Jeff and no endorsement by MAZON, its employees or directors should be inferred or implied.)
