$1.45 million granted in the United States and abroad for hunger relief
MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger funds national and international nonprofits

Los Angeles, CA: June 11, 2008 -- MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger announced a total of $1.45 in grants to 134 leading hunger relief organizations in the U.S. and abroad today.

The grants span the globe and support a wide variety of programs. Whether helping with preparation and delivery of nutritionally-balanced meals to thousands of people in the Los Angeles area, assisting with food stamp outreach, enrollment and advocacy efforts in Tallahassee, providing social services for low-income Jews in Chicago's Uptown area, or serving over 400 hot meals each day in Brooklyn, MAZON grants seek to achieve both short and long-term solutions to hunger.

In 1985, MAZON was founded as a national nonprofit organization that raises funds from the Jewish community and allocates the money to organizations that alleviate and prevent hunger among people of all faiths and backgrounds. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, over 35 million Americans, including over 12 million children, are hungry or on the verge of hunger.

"For 23 years, MAZON has worked to bring critical relief to families in need," said MAZON President Dr. H. Eric Schockman. "Our grantees and partners nationwide help make this possible, and we salute them for their visionary leadership and tireless effort."

Since 1986, MAZON has granted over $47 million in support of anti-hunger programs and advocacy working to end hunger and supply aid to needy families throughout the United States, Israel and other countries.
