The COVID-19 pandemic has sent shockwaves through our healthcare and economic systems, spotlighting the gaping holes in our nation’s safety net.
MAZON President and CEO Abby J. Leibman released a message expressing the urgent importance of SNAP in the wake of the Coronavirus, saying, “Food insecurity isn’t new in America; before the pandemic, there were almost 40 million people who didn’t know where there next meal was coming from. But in the wake of the pandemic, that number has risen to over 60 million and is still climbing.”
Food banks and pantries are crucial in providing nutrition during gaps in food assistance, but charity alone cannot possibly keep up with the need. Leibman said, “While food banks struggle to try and fill in the gaps that losing your job has left people, there is no substitute for being able to access the nfood you need with dignity, with choice, and with options, and the only to do that is through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.”
